Lasers are highly concentrated beams of light that can be used for a variety of cosmetic purposes. The term “laser” is an acronym for “Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation.”

 

Lasers emit focused beams of light at specific wavelengths, allowing them to target specific tissues or pigments. The wavelength and energy level of the laser determine its effectiveness for particular treatments.

Types of Lasers

There are many types of lasers, each with specific applications and wavelengths. The most common types used in medical and  cosmetic treatments include:

  • Ablative Lasers: These lasers remove the outer layers of skin to promote healing and rejuvenation. Common ablative lasers include carbon dioxide (CO2) and erbium lasers.
  • Non-Ablative Lasers: These lasers work beneath the skin's surface without removing the outer layers, promoting collagen production and tissue regeneration. Common non-ablative lasers include Nd:YAG and diode lasers.
  • Fractional Lasers: These lasers create tiny micro-injuries in the skin, leaving surrounding tissue intact, allowing for quicker healing. Fractional lasers can be ablative or non-ablative.
  • Q-Switched Lasers: These lasers deliver short, high-energy pulses, often used for tattoo removal or pigmentation issues.
  • Alexandrite Lasers: Commonly used for hair removal and pigment correction.
  • Pulsed Dye Lasers: Used to treat vascular conditions like spider veins and rosacea.
