Congenital Hydrocephalus

Congenital hydrocephalus is a condition that affects the brain, causing an accumulation of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). This buildup can lead to increased pressure inside the head, potentially causing damage to the brain tissues. It is a condition present at birth and may result from genetic factors, developmental issues, or complications during pregnancy.

Causes:

  • Genetic Factors: Some cases of congenital hydrocephalus may be linked to genetic factors.
  • Developmental Abnormalities: Issues during the development of the brain and spinal cord can contribute to the condition.
  • Complications During Pregnancy: Infections or other complications during pregnancy may increase the risk.
Hydrocephalus

Symptoms:

  • Enlarged Head: A rapid increase in head size may be noticeable.
  • Bulging Fontanelle: The soft spot on a baby's head may appear swollen or bulging.
  • Eyes Looking Downward: Also known as sunsetting, where the eyes appear to gaze downward.
  • Vomiting and Irritability: Babies may experience vomiting, irritability, or feeding difficulties.

Diagnosis:

  • Prenatal Ultrasound: Congenital hydrocephalus may be detected during routine prenatal ultrasounds.
  • Clinical Evaluation: A physical examination of the baby's head and neurological assessment.
  • Imaging Studies: MRIs or CT scans to visualize the brain and assess the extent of hydrocephalus. It can also diagnose brain abnormalities which cause hydrocephalus.

Treatment Options:

  • Shunt Placement: A thin tube (shunt) is surgically placed to drain excess fluid from the brain to another part of the body. Most commonly the abdomen(peritoneal cavity)is used and the procedure is termed as VENTRICULO PERITONEAL SHUNT PLACEMENT.
  • Endoscopic Third Ventriculostomy (ETV): A procedure where a small hole is made in the floor of the brain to allow fluid to flow out.
  • Follow-up Care: Regular check-ups and monitoring to ensure the effectiveness of treatment.

Living with Congenital Hydrocephalus:

  • Ongoing Care: Regular medical appointments and monitoring are essential to manage the condition.
  • Developmental Milestones: Special attention to achieving developmental milestones with appropriate support. Occupational therapists and physiotherapists help with this.
