Antenatal Counselling

Antenatal counselling, also known as prenatal counselling, is a valuable service offered to expectant parents during pregnancy. Antenatal ultrasonography forms an important part of this process. During anomaly scans(TARGET SCAN) done in the early second trimester few congenital surgical anomalies can be detected in the developing fetus. For these, your obstetrician refers the mother and foetus to a paediatric surgeon for antenatal counselling. The pediatric surgeon prognosticates the abnormalities based on known facts and provides valuable insight to the expectant parents.

Antenatal counseling is important as sometimes the child may need a surgical correction immediately after the birth. Some unfortunate fetus may have congenital anomalies that are incompatible with life, and if diagnosed on time, termination of pregnancy can avoid a lifetime of misery for the family.
