Breast augmentation also known as, Augmentation Mammoplasty is placement of breast implants under the breasts. It is done through small incision, usually an inch in size, placed at inconspicuous site, commonly under breast crease through which breast implant is inserted.

Types of Breast Implants

  • Saline Implants: Filled with sterile saltwater, saline implants are inserted empty and then filled to the desired volume.

     If a saline implant ruptures, the saline is safely absorbed by the body.


  • Silicone Implants: Filled with silicone gel, these implants are pre-filled to a specific volume. Silicone implants often have a more natural feel but require regular monitoring for potential leaks.

Other variations include:

  • Round Implants: Provide a fuller look, with more volume at the top of the breast.
  • Teardrop (Anatomical) Implants: Mimic the natural shape of the breast, with more volume at the bottom.
  • Textured or Smooth Implants: Surface texture can affect implant movement and position.

Breast augmentation can also be done by fat grafting in selected cases in which patient do not want silicone implants. In this technique, patients own fat harvested from abdomen area is transferred to breast.

The Fat Grafting Procedure

Fat grafting involves three main steps: harvesting, processing, and injecting the fat into the breasts.

  • Harvesting: The surgeon uses liposuction to extract fat from a donor site, typically the abdomen, thighs, or flanks. This involves inserting a small cannula through tiny incisions and gently suctioning out the fat.
  • Processing: The extracted fat is processed to remove impurities, excess fluid, and other unwanted components, leaving behind purified fat cells.
  • Injection: The purified fat is carefully injected into the breasts in multiple small deposits to ensure even distribution and optimal results. The surgeon carefully positions the fat to create the desired shape and contour.

Fat grafting can provide a natural and subtle enhancement to the breasts. However, due to the potential for fat absorption, additional sessions may be required to achieve the desired volume and symmetry. The long-term results depend on factors like the surgeon’s technique, the patient’s anatomy, and the healing process.
