Congenital hydrocephalus is a condition that affects the brain, causing an accumulation of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). This buildup can lead to increased pressure inside the head, potentially causing damage to the brain tissues. It is a condition present at birth and may result from genetic factors, developmental issues, or complications during pregnancy.
Some cases of congenital hydrocephalus may be linked to genetic factors.
Issues during the development of the brain and spinal cord can contribute to the condition.
Infections or other complications during pregnancy may increase the risk.
A rapid increase in head size may be noticeable.
The soft spot on a baby’s head may appear swollen or bulging.
Also known as sunsetting, where the eyes appear to gaze downward.
Babies may experience vomiting, irritability, or feeding difficulties.
Congenital hydrocephalus may be detected during routine prenatal ultrasounds.
A physical examination of the baby’s head and neurological assessment.
MRIs or CT scans to visualize the brain and assess the extent of hydrocephalus. It can also diagnose brain abnormalities which cause hydrocephalus.
A thin tube (shunt) is surgically placed to drain excess fluid from the brain to another part of the body. Most commonly the abdomen(peritoneal cavity)is used and the procedure is termed as VENTRICULO PERITONEAL SHUNT PLACEMENT.
A procedure where a small hole is made in the floor of the brain to allow fluid to flow out.
Regular check-ups and monitoring to ensure the effectiveness of treatment.
Regular medical appointments and monitoring are essential to manage the condition.
Special attention to achieving developmental milestones with appropriate support. Occupational therapists and physiotherapists help with this.
Working closely with educators to address any learning challenges that may arise.
