Hypospadias is defined as an abnormal opening of the urethral meatus. It can be located anywhere from the glans penis, along the shaft of penis, to the scrotum. The severity of disease is decided by the site of urethral meatus.

Due to hypospadias, there is an abnormal penile curvature called as Chordee. Sometimes penile shaft can be twisted, called as Torsion.  Surgery is usually required for normal direction of urinary stream and for proper toilet training. It is usually done at around 10-12 months of age. The age of surgery is also based on the size of the penile tissue and health of the urethral plate(the future urethra).In few cases, with small penis and undeveloped urethral plate pre operative testosterone injections are given.

Surgery called urethroplasty incorporates correction of all anatomical abnormalities in this diseases. It tries to achieve normalcy in anatomy of skin(prepuce), urethra and glans.

 

Urethroplasty involves creation of urethra from local tissue. A catheter is kept for 7-10 days and removed after 10 days after the newly created urethral tissue heals.
